On March 26, 27 & 28, the Celtic Heritage Socety of the Permian Basin will hold the 2nd Annual Celtic Festival and Gathering of the Clans in Midland, TX. If you are looking for something different, come join Team ZiaCache at the Festival. There will be lots of Irish Dancing, Scottish music, storytellers, vendors of Celtic food, some Highland Games, a golf tournament and bagpipes (lots and lots of bagpipes!). You don't have to be Celtic, Irish or Scottish to have fun at the festival. You can find more info at www.chspb.org. Now, what does this have to do with geocaching??? I thought about trying an event cache in conjunction with the Festival, but I'm not sure it would be approved. So, I'll post it here as an "informal" event! And, Team ZiaCache will be there, in kilts, of course!

How odd......just today I was looking up once again what clan I belonged to. It seems I'm connected to three, but I'm assuming most people go with the direct line?? In that case, mine is Clan MacDonald. Anyway, interesting! I wonder if I could buy plaid pencils there? But......why wouldn't it be approved? Our Corn Maze was........

I think the Corn Maize was OK under the current rules and guidelines. Their examples of things that are not appropriate are pretty specific and now cover several kinds of events we have done as event caches in the past. It looks like they now want event caches to be just for geocachers, about geocaching, and not connected with another event where non-geocachers will be the majority. Their guidelines at: www.geocaching.com/about/guidelines.aspx#eventpretty well specifically rule it out Seems like things like the Festival would be a perfect opportunity to set up an Event Cache and info point at one of the Clan booths to recruit new folks. It's so far between cachers out here that it's nice to have something else to draw them and provide some other entertainment in addition to an event cache (the Maize is perfect example of a good one). I guess when you're used to having a hundred folks show up for a breakfast event cache in the cities, it's easy to forget how things can be out here in the wild west! Oh well, it's their game and their rules, we're just the players....... On the Clan stuff, claim 'em all! A good rule of thumb is to pick the one with the best looking tartan and accessories (badges, pins, etc). Some of the tartans are really ugly, but fortunately most clans have several versions. Clan Morrison is a good example - the red tartan is (IMHO) washed out looking. The green is much better, so that's the one I go with. McDonald is always a good choice. They were the Lord of the Isles (rulers of western Scotland) for generations and a popular clan. They also have bunches of tartan choices! Last year we had folks selling just about everything you could think of with plaid, shamrocks and such, so the pencils would be a good bet.

Me needs to see which clan I belong to ;D probably the Clan of the Crazed Hey, okay here's a deal, we could have an event that just so happens to be at the same time as the festival ... I'm having a planning one for the "Evil to Come" anyways, we could have fun at the festival, I can plant some more evil ... ummm challenging ones around and we could one evening have a planning meeting too --- or lunch - and then everyone could cache as they pleased -- what do you guys think?

bet somewhere in the past these families murdered each other with gusto. Aye, lad! You certainly have your Highland history correct. The only thing changing faster than weather in the Western Isles is which clan was fighting which clan (or more often, which was stealing cattle from which).

Hey Char! Glad to see you back on the forum. Looks like you have been busy. I've got to be down there Tuesday evening for a meeting, so I may take a run at couple of those new ones.
I will be at the County Exhibit Building pretty much all day from Thursday morning until Sunday afternoon. I don't have any caching stuff set up for inside. I'm in charge of grounds and facilities (or as one of our group said - "Oh, you'll be just like Hagrid). So, there's no telling where I'll be at any one time.
As I'm telling folks, just look for the old, big guy in a kilt. That should narrow it down to 2 or 3 hundred!!!
Everybody's welcome to attend, so come on out and listed to the pipes!
;D

;D The Festival was good - I think. I was running from 7 AM till 10 or later every night. It looked like folks had a good time and most seemed happy. Lots of vendors, clans and bagpipes, lots of bagpipes. I was ready to crash and burn by Sunday night (sorry Char, bad phrase BTW, Char , were you by any chance doing aerial recon on Friday? I was outside with some vendors and a blue and white light plane was circling the festival site. I don't know planes, but it was a single engine high wing (Cessna??). There is another festival of some sort scheduled in Odessa in April (the weekend of the 16th, I think). I'll find some more info and post it for anyone interested. I'm not sure what they will have - it's their first year. It will be all outside, so weather may be a big factor (April in west Texas). If it's nice, I'll probably drive down Saturday and see what's happening.
